Jul 28The Flying Pigeon Launch Party @ 01 Magazine

Where: 01 Magazine Pop-Up Shop (map)
When: Opening Reception | 7pm Thursday, July 28th
FB: Opening Party for the Flying Pigeon

The Flying Pigeon Bicycle has been brought to Canada by Yulu, a multi-cultural Vancouver-based advertising agency. In collaboration with 01 Magazine, we will be launching the opening of the Flying Pigeon showroom at the 01 Magazine Pop Up space to highlight the brand.

The space has been filled with an inspired collection of artifacts, antiques and found objects provided by the drool-worthy The Found and The Freed.

About The Flying Pigeon:

Only one bicycle has earned the distinction of being the single most popular mechanized vehicle on the planet. That bike is The Flying Pigeon. Given as national gifts to presidents and dignitaries alike, these are bicycles with stories, cultural icons, working machines built to last a lifetime.
First unveiled in China in 1950, and based on English roadster cycles from the early 20th century, the styling is classic. The look, iconic. The history, rich. And the Flying Pigeon is now available in Canada for the very first time.

Bicycles will be available at The 01 Magazine Pop Up Space, Roden Gray, and online.

#Cheaper10Evenings & Weekends

Evenings + Weekends Palletts Front Door
At this year’s Cheaper Show, we had the pleasure of working with the Evenings + Weekends design collective, which was responsible for the interior design of our venue. Their amazing crew worked for weeks leading up to the show to create a visually stunning experience for everyone who attended the show.

Evenings + Weekends is a design collective founded by Raneen Nosh, Emma Sims and Darcy Hanna, all of whom are currently pursuing a Masters in Architecture at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. The members of Evenings + Weekends come from diverse backgrounds ranging from the liberal arts to industrial design and film. Their collaboration grew out of a collective interest in bridging the fields of art, architecture and design as well as a desire to produce projects that allow them to engage with the city.

They have been inspired by the idea of making architecture more accessible to the city, and the city more accessible to young emerging designers and architects. This idea of reciprocation can be extended to the larger creative community, and they hope to establish stronger connections with the creative dialogue that is currently taking place in Vancouver.

This year, The Cheaper Show’s in-house designer, Adam Fryatt, teamed up with the Evenings + Weekends crew to design and build a number of satellite installations, aiming to enhance the experience of the show. The palette entry wall, the cinder block bar and the lounge chairs in the photo booth were all a result of this collaboration.

PhotosSetting up the Cheaper Show

Here are some snaps of the elbow grease, dust and dog barking that all came together to create the Cheaper Show No. 10. The transformation of the space at 188 Kingsway is unbelievable and could not have been possible without the generous help of our volunteers and staff. Thanks everyone!

#Cheaper10Cheaper Show Merch is Here!

merchOur merch store at the venue opens at noon on Saturday, ahead of the show, so feel free to come down early to get your hands on our limited edition goods. We are excited to be offering some new items as well as bringing back some classic designs from earlier years.

Our First Annual Cheaper Show book is fresh off the press, and generating incredible response already. This is a limited edition 64-page book featuring art, interviews, writings and historical pieces from some of this city’s top writers and artists. The book was designed by local design agency, CLOU. Ryan Romero and Travis Collier of CLOU also designed this year’s posters, handbills and VIP Invitations. Watch a video about the making of the book.

There were only 1000 of these produced, we’re down to 800 in 2 weeks and the likelihood of another pressing is very small, so get yours while you can.  The book will be available for $10.

totebagWe’ve created our first Tote Bag, perfect for summer! We have a very short run on these and already people are asking where they can buy them. They’ll be on sale for $15

We are also excited to be bringing back the classic block letter BUY ART NOT COCAINE t-shirts in bold white on black (see top photo). These are available in S-XL sizes and are going for $25.

We will have limited editions of previous year shirts available as well.

PhotosBuilding a Gallery in Ten Days

Everyday now, more volunteers and staff gather at Broadway & Kingsway to prepare for TCS No. 10. While some hang art, the rest furiously type, build, clean and sweat. That’s right – its all coming together. Here are some photos snapped by Jennifer Martin of our progress. Also included are more images of the artist panels installed at our intersection.

VideoThe Cheaper Show Book

This Saturday at The Cheaper Show we will be selling our first book. We worked with Ryan Romero and Travis Collier of CLOU for two months to put together a compendium of art and articles that discuss and display the Vancouver Art Community and The Cheaper Show’s function within it. Here is a short film on how it came together.

#Cheaper10The Cheaper Show in Mount Pleasant

Giant PosterThe Mount Pleasant neighborhood is an area that many of our staff and artists have called home for years. It is an ever-flourishing hub for creative living, independent businesses, boast worthy roasts, and an inclusive populace. We are absolutely thrilled to host the Cheaper Show in Mount Pleasant this year, in our neighborhood.

On June 25th, the Mount Pleasant community will be partnering with The Cheaper Show to offer a neighborhood-wide Cheaper Show Day. In the spirit of the show, neighboring shops, restaurants and bars will be offering Cheaper discounts for the entire day. Patrons of The Cheaper Show can visit any of the participating businesses on June 25th and receive a discount.

Start your day off at The Regional Assembly of Text, making a button-niere for that blazer you’ve been holding out for at Eugene Choo. Take a break, stop at The Whip for lunch. Or The Wallflower. Or Latitude. The list goes on. For the complete vendor listings and discounts, visit: Main Street Cheaper Show Day.

If your eagerness for The Cheaper Show has given you cause to pace around the Kingsway & Broadway intersection, you should most definitely take a gander at the 12′ x 8′ Cheaper Show Artist Panels that have been installed next to our venue! They feature ten Mount Pleasant artists including Kyle Scully, Robert Mearns, Andy Dixon, Brad Harms, Michelle Ford, Tiffin Breen, Andy Chung, Maya Beaudry, Jennilee Marigomen and Ben Frey.

We also installed a whopping 16′ x 16′ Cheaper Show poster on an abandoned building off of Main Street. It only took us 8 hours!
