The Cheaper Show is a massive one night art event where all of the work sells for a uniform affordable price. We remove barriers between talented emerging artists, established artists, buyers, curators, gallery directors and collectors, creating new channels for engaged interaction. The show’s format is unparalleled anywhere in Canada. This year’s show marks our 10th anniversary.
What started as a modest show created by three artists needing a platform to display their art, The Cheaper Show has grown into the largest single-night cultural art event in Western Canada. We showcase hundreds of multi-disciplined artists, based solely on their artistic merit, and offer all of the works at one price, regardless of market value.
The energy surrounding The Cheaper Show reached a new peak in 2010, and over 7,000 descended upon Vancouver’s historic Gastown to celebrate emerging talent. Traditionally the artists featured in the show represent 75% local and 25% national and international. Last year we received over 1000 international submissions from over 200 cities.
To address the growing international interest, we are looking into taking the show to other cities outside of Canada in the years to come. In the last ten years The Cheaper Show has displayed the works of over 1,000 artists and sold over 1,000 pieces of art. We have had over $165,000 in sales. This is the first year that 100% of the art sales will be returned to the participating artists. In previous years, the artists have received 75% of each art sale.
2011 marks an important year of expansion for The Cheaper Show. Our first commercial gallery, Black and Yellow, opened in March in The Waldorf Hotel under the direction of The Cheaper Show’s Lead Curator, Jessica Delorme.
