Volunteer for The Cheaper Show No. 9

Volunteering with The Cheaper Show is an invaluable, unforgettable experience. The comprehensive team of volunteers is involved in every component of the show from inception to completion, and integral to its development, operation, and continual growth.
Upon debut, The Cheaper Show boasted a volunteer team of two, a number that doubled over the years with each installment. Cheaper 8 brought this number to thirty, and Cheaper 9 will more than triple it, as the volunteer team this year will surpass one hundred.
Working on the show, volunteers utilize relevant backgrounds and experiences, enhance skills, and pursue new ones, while working on what has become the biggest one-night art show in Canada.
Volunteers receive inclusive training and information, relevant to their respective areas. Though there are many different roles to fill, ideal applicants are fervent, hard working, constructive, and committed to the show’s operation and growth.
A diverse production team allows for the utmost of opportunities, offering positions in all areas of the show: art installation, crowd management, IT consultation, personal relations, photography, principal assistance, sales, service, site construction, video, and web strategy.
The show is currently accepting applications for volunteer positions within the show’s ninth installment, taking place in June 2010.

Testimonials
Volunteering with Cheaper 9 was a great experience. I helped paint walls and hang the artwork over a three-day period, and sold tickets for the bar during the event. It took a lot of people to create the space for the show and the final result was amazing. Everybody pitching in and helping made the show what it was; a place with a positive, vibrant ambiance full of great art! I wanted to help out with the show because of how local artwork was brought out of the studios and basements and into a public sphere. The show supports local emerging and professional artists and facilitates a space that the whole city is able to participate and have fun in.

Volunteering for the 2008 Cheaper Show was an amazing experience. I was able to discover new art, meet new people, see the Storyeum building go from empty to fully packed in a few short hours, and become either people’s favourite or least favourite person as I took tickets at the end of the line up of over 1000 people. As a more peripheral member of Vancouver’s arts scene, I was exposed to art and people I would never have heard about otherwise. Supporting the production team with whatever needed doing during set up was so rewarding when I saw how well received the show was. That historic building in Gastown was packed with people from all walks of life. During the show I was the lucky door person – quite the task it turns out, when you have well over 1000 people standing in front of you. Not to worry though, because the environment created by the organizers was so welcoming and fun that no one got too uppity. Most of all, I felt proud to be part of a show that makes art accessible to Vancouver’s communities and gives their artists a venue to share their work. There are so many ways to support The Cheaper Show, and I will definitely be volunteering again in the future.
